With the pandemic and rising inequities, the stark reality has gone from bad to worse – with the wage gap increasing even further for Latinas. If progress continues at the same rate, it will take almost two centuries for Latinas to reach equal pay with White men. Every Latina Equal Pay Day, we are reminded of this unfair stat: Latinas make nearly half of every dollar White men make: this year on average 54 cents. This year, Latina Equal Pay Day fell on December 8 which represents the unfair reality that Latinas are required to work for an additional 11 months to get paid what their Non-Hispanic White male coworkers made in 2021. When Latinas are simultaneously among the largest group of women workers and the lowest paid (after Native women), our economy is broken. In Pennsylvania, the Latinx population recently surpassed one million people, representing a 43% increase from a decade ago. Latinas are opening new businesses at the highest rate in the country and have rising rates of college enrollment and degree attainment and excel in every sector and industry in the United States. This wage gap persists despite the fact that Latinas are one of the fastest growing, most powerful groups in the United States. The average wage gap faced by Latinas working full-time year-round and part-time of 54 cents to every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men. People with disabilities, sexual orientation, age-these are all factors that inform wage gaps. On average, Black, Latina, and Native American women experience wider wage gaps than white women. The answer is that the gender wage gap only quantifies structural bias and discrimination based on one dimension of identity, and the dynamics of discrimination are intersectional.
